USU EXTENSION TOURS
BOTANICAL CENTER
First, we will visit the Utah State University Botanical Center and Wetland Discovery Point in Kaysville, Utah. The botanical center guides the conservation and wise use of plant, water, and energy resources through research-based educational experiences, demonstrations, and technology. At USU Botanical Center you can find educational opportunities for children and adults. The Botanical Center also features a much-loved urban fishery, walking and biking trails, wetland areas that support birds and other wildlife, a volunteer-tended garden, a seasonal farmers market and a full schedule of classes, workshops, educational field trips and other events. Visit the website for more details: http://usubotanicalcenter.org/

WETLAND DISCOVERY POINT
Wetland Discovery Point is the first LEED Platinum Certified Public Building in Utah, featuring:
Solar Power, Rainwater Harvesting, Passive Solar Heating, and Natural Ventilation.
Just a few of the reasons Wetland Discovery Point is Platinum certified by the U.S. Green Building Council, the organization's highest recognition for sustainability. The building is the centerpiece of the wetland education programs that involve thousands of school children each year, and is also the site of community events and classes.

UTAH WATER RESEARCH LAB
Next, we will journey to Logan, Utah, and the Utah Water Research Lab. The water lab is situated along the Logan River and dedicated to conducting and facilitating research, design, testing, and training that is related to the stewardship of water quantity and quality. The facility includes two hydraulics labs and an environmental quality lab. In the hydraulics labs are a variety of flumes, channels, pumps, pipelines, equipment, and instrumentation for conducting hydraulic research, model studies, valve testing, and flow meter calibrations. Water is supplied by gravity flow at rates up to 200 cfs from an upstream reservoir through a 48-inch diameter pipe to a flume (8-feet wide by 6-feet deep) that extends more than 500 feet.  The 48-inch pipe can deliver water at 30 feet of head to the main laboratory level through a network of steel piping located under the floor. In the modeling lab, detailed large scale models of dams and spillways, as well as other hydraulic models, can be constructed and tested with flows up to 130 cfs. As a recirculating facility, the new laboratory can provide a flow in any season of the year, without impacting river operations. For more details visit http://uwrl.usu.edu/

STAN L. ALBRECHT AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES BUILDING
Finally, we’ll make the short drive to the USU campus and the Stan L. Albrecht Agricultural Sciences Building where we’ll enjoy some famous Aggie Ice Cream and visit the offices of Utah State University Extension and the Western Rural Development Center.
