Delivering resources and programming to rural communities throughout the Western U.S.
Philosophy & Vision
The Western Rural Development Center contributes to improving the quality of life in the rural West as a catalyst, a convener and a conduit.
Catalyst
The Center initiates projects by bringing resources and people together to jump-start innovative concepts.
Convener
The Center brings eclectic groups of people together to explore issues, learn about one another’s values and goals, and think creatively about how to shape the kind of West that we can all proudly call home.
Conduit
The Center enhances the capacity of rural Western communities by supporting the creation of businesses and the development of desirable assets using a sustainable approach; supporting local cultures; and creating the ability to seize emerging opportunities and solve problems.
Focus Areas
The Center focuses its efforts on two programmatic areas:
Enterprise Development
Natural Resources
The WRDC’s efforts in both focus areas will:
- Strengthen connections between extension and research faculty, community and tribal colleges, NGOs, and state and federal agencies that are engaged in rural development activities.
- Enhance the capacity for community-led rural development. This involves identifying and maximizing human, social and economic capital.
